Training for Altitude at Sea Level

You live at 100 meters. The trek tops out at 5,000. Here's what actually transfers — and the one thing no gym can give you.

The awkward truth about altitude: you cannot train your body to have more oxygen. Acclimatization happens on the mountain, on the mountain's schedule, and the sea-level athlete who shows up fit but arrogant gets humbled beside the sea-level athlete who shows up fit and patient. So train the parts that transfer.

What transfers: leg endurance under load, because altitude turns every staircase into two. Train stairs with a weighted pack until boring, then add more stairs. Aerobic base, because a lower resting heart rate is spare capacity you'll spend up high. Zone 2, hours of it, the unglamorous kind. And downhill strength — eccentric quad work — because descents injure more trekkers than ascents and nobody trains for them.

What doesn't transfer: peak intensity. Your VO2-max intervals are lovely and largely irrelevant at 4,500 meters, where the governor is oxygen, not fitness. An hour of sprints buys you less than an hour of hills with a pack. This is good news for almost everyone.

The thing no gym gives you is the personal data: how your body specifically responds up high. Some people sleep badly at 3,000 m, some get headaches at 3,500, a few feel nothing until 4,800.
